Secondary 8th Grade SA Course “Disaster Preparedness”
On Wednesday, July 16, the Secondary 8th grade SA Course students had a class titled “Disaster Preparedness” at MMRC. This was a collaborative class among the English Department, Home Economics Department, and MMRC.
Japan is prone to disasters due to various natural conditions, and the 8th graders are learning about disaster preparedness in home economics. For their home economics and English summer homework, the students are to research what emergency supplies they have at home, what they would like to add to their stockpile, and then make a screen capture video presentation in English.
During this class, MMRC provided books and databases to research what kinds of items are needed in a disaster stockpile. The students then created a vocabulary list about disasters and stockpiles. This list will provide input for the scripts they must make to accompany their screen capture videos.
By reading and comparing books, they learned that there are many different types of stockpiles. They also learned that different family structures and disasters require different stockpiles. MMRC is helping the 8th graders deepen and expand their learning.(MMRC)
